Welcome back Mateys! This week I want to take you on a journey of game design and why we created a game which combines two genres that seem opposite of each other, arcade shooter and rpg. Those two genres had many great games over the years, some even mobile pirate games. However, combining the two genres and having them actually work together, especially on a mobile device came to us pretty quickly.
The goal was to develop the top rated mobile pirate game and for that we needed to get the basic gameplay elements to work together to create a fun and addicting experience that challenges our player at one point and also lets him dominate the enemy at another. The arcade shooter sometimes can feel monotonous, especially with a level count such as 99, but a varied experience will dissipate that.
The RPG element of the game is meant to provide the feeling of collecting and utilizing items scattered throughout our world, unique items such as a healing skull, or a cup of espresso that gives you a jolt of energy and speeds up your shooting rate. I carefully paid attention to other games that I have played for a long time and have extracted the very finest design elements in terms of fun and longevity. On top of that, we are awaiting the time where we can expand the game in terms of locations and characters and tie the whole world together, so you feel that you’ve been magically transported to an exciting place.
I’ve played quite a few pirate games online and noticed that we had to create incredibly simple controls that anyone could get a hang of right away. With a 4 button layout mimicking the controls of the PS5 or XBOX controller on the console side, it’s very easy to pick up and start playing.. From a visual point of view we decided to curve the world and bring in the action to always be challenging the player’s decision making skills. We wanted the action to always feel close, even if far away and the shooting cursor to have a bit of depth forgiveness.
So what is next for Pirate’s Boom Boom? Jack and I are really excited to introduce seasonal expansion with Story Mode and PVP Mode. Story mode dives into our world on a deeper level and explains why our heroes Pirate and Crow are battling all these characters. As pirates in videogames, they have a very unique and interesting story. They are the true underdogs in their small boat (Helena) taking on enemy fleets, armadas, pirates and larger than life characters and creatures. We want players to experience the Story Mode similar to how they would watch a Netflix series, but with the gameplay component. On top of that, special boss enemies and items will be added to the arcade mode to create a richer overall experience.
Coming up – The heroes of our world, Pirate & Crow, and what they eat for breakfast.
