As stated in a previous blog post, oftentimes, pirates are casted and viewed as villains, and they usually have a peg leg, a patch eye, are pretty dirty, and maybe have a pet monkey or parrot. Pirate’s Boom Boom, one of the best new pirate games, has given pirates a new life, or at least our heroes, Pirate and Crow. Our YouTube content and the original illustrated book the entire story was born from, shows Pirate as a loveable, ever optimistic underdog and his more grounded, perhaps even grumpy, friend Crow, make them a silly and cheer worthy team.
We wanted to create a character that was not only silly and fun to watch, partially due to the unique and appealing black and white style, but also due to his attitude and motives. In all of our previous content he is finding himself in absurd, fantastical, and even otherworldly trouble but we want to always root for him because he seems so cheerful, positive and a bit of an underdog. Most pirate ship games feature a hero that has an epic warship, loaded with cannons, swords, billowing sails and maybe even a crew of helpers but Pirate and Crow find themselves sitting in a rundown rowboat, sailing the high seas. It’s already a fun image to picture, and makes them feel so small against the oncoming giant enemy ships, but it gets even funnier when they acquire improvements and their little boat becomes armored and weaponized but really looks like it’s about to topple over due to all the stuff they’ve collected, be it treasures, found objects, rare artifacts or just junk that they happened to fancy.
Most pirate games online are really only focused on the ships as the main element, but we really wanted to make you feel like you are one with the Pirate and Crow team – so Pirate is learning new talents and skills, improving his ship and his ability to take on the most powerful enemies of the seas. It creates an even better sense of charm when you see Pirate, while battling enemies, still has time for a cup of espresso for a little boost of energy, or is practicing karate to improve his skills more. Pirate and Crow are always learning, always growing, always exploring and adventuring and I find that really charming and lovable. His sheer excitement over even small things always makes me laugh and they are a delight to do the voices for. Crow’s obvious observations and even sarcastic wit play a nice balance off of Pirate’s childlike optimism.
Speaking of characters, it’s a common tactic to make enemies only cruel, or only villainous, especially in pirate games. Out of all the free pirate games out there, Pirate Boom Boom is really trying to make each character feel unique and despite being an enemy, appealing in their own way. Take the Armada Fleet, which bands together in a row of ships to attack you as a unit. Their Admiral, pops in to admit defeat, and while he’s a buff, gruff looking guy, he pathetically waves the small surrender flag. While the Kamikaze ghost captain looks like a zombie, he still looks a bit goofy and almost seems to be trying to spook you as some theatrical act. In an effort to make Pirate Boom Boom a top rated mobile pirate game, we have really taken care to design our characters and are so thrilled to get more in detail with the world of characters in Story Mode!
